What we like most about BBVA Free Checking

What we like least about BBVA Free Checking

There are three Overdraft Protection options at BBVA and we're not fond of any of them.

  • Linked account service. You can link another BBVA account or a secondary checking account from a different bank to cover overdrafts. With both options, you will be charged a once-daily Inter-Account Transfer Fee of $12 ($7 in CA) for each day the bank makes one or more transfers.
  • Overdraft Protection Line of Credit. You can link an existing checking account to a line of credit to cover overdrafts but you will be charged a once-daily Overdraft Protection Fee of $12 ($7 in CA) for each day the bank makes one or more advances from your ODP Line of Credit and may be subject to a 21% APR.

BBVA Bank Money Market Account

Earn 0.75% APY. The BBVA money market account offers a competitive 0.75 percent APY on balances of $10,000 and over. For balances under $10,000, the rate is 0.05% APY. You'll get all the benefits of a traditional savings account but with checking account features like check-writing and a debit card.

BBVA Money Market Account has all the features that make a good money market account except for the monthly maintenance fee. The monthly service charge of $15 can be waived if the minimum daily balance for each month is $10,000 or more; or, you set up an automatic, recurring monthly transfer of $25 or more from a BBVA checking account to your BBVA Money Market account.

What we like least about BBVA Money Market Account

  • Monthly fee. Unless you meet the requirements to waive the $15 monthly fee, you'll end up eating away at your interest-earning power.
  • Minimum balance required. You must have at least $10,000 on deposit to earn the competitive interest rate of 0.75% APY.

BBVA Bank CD Accounts

Certificate of Deposit Options. CDs can be a great place to store cash. Rates are typically higher than savings or money market account but you must commit to the term of the CD to get the rate. Cashing in a CD before the term will cost you a surrender charge that can reduce the earned interest.

BBVA 12-month Certificate of Deposit (CD):

  • $500 minimum opening deposit.
  • Earn 0.40% APY.
  • No Maintenance Fees.
  • The early withdrawal penalty is $25 plus 1% of the amount withdrawn.

BBVA 36-month Certificate of Deposit (CD):

What we like most about BBVA CD Accounts

  • Only $500 to open. BBVA Certificate of Deposit Accounts offer a lower minimum opening deposit than most big banks.

  • Temporary Rate. CD rate is only available for a limited time, so you may want to lock in your money in this CD sooner rather than later.
